Family of OFW Accident Victim in Hong Kong Gets P220,000 Aid

The family in Hilongos, Leyte of Lourdes Rabi, 49, who died of a freak accident on April 4 in Tai Koo Shing, Hong Kong will receive a total of P220,000 in financial assistance from the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA), Alberto Peñaflor, OWWA administrative officer in eastern Visayas said on April 11.

Citing an OWWA Hong Kong report, he said Rabi was passing by a building in Tai Koo Shing at about 10 a.m. on April 4 when she was hit on the head by a Chinese woman, surnamed Yee, who apparently jumped from the rooftop of a building in a suspected case of suicide.

Rabi, who has been working as a domestic helper in Hong Kong for 10 years, sustained severe head injuries and was immediately rushed to the Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital where she died a few hours later.

Radio Television Hong Kong reported on April 4 that Yee died on the spot.

According to the OWWA Hong Kong report, Yee was “emotionally distressed” after an argument with her boyfriend the night before she jumped from the roof of the building.

Of the total P220,000 cash aid that will be provided by OWWA to Rabi’s family, P200,000 represents financial assistance and P20,000 is for  burial expenses.
